Il riassunto di “Harry Potter” che J.K. Rowling inviò alle case editrici per farlo pubblicare

Come tutti gli autori che propongono un romanzo a una casa editrice, anche J.K. Rowling scrisse un riassunto – tecnicamente si chiama sinossi – per presentare la trama di Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale, il primo libro della saga di Harry Potter. Era il 1995 e il libro venne rifiutato da tutti i principali editori britannici finché Bloomsbury decise di pubblicarlo nel 1997 in Regno Unito e l’anno successivo negli Stati Uniti. Il riassunto battuto a macchina è tra gli oggetti esposti nella mostra sul mondo di Harry Potter organizzata dalla British Library a Londra, in corso fino al 28 febbraio 2018.

«Harry Potter vive con sua zia, suo zio e suo cugino perché i suoi genitori sono morti in un incidente d’auto, o è così che gli hanno raccontato. Ai Dursleys non piace che Harry faccia delle domande; in realtà sembra che non gli piaccia proprio niente di lui, soprattutto le cose strane che continuano a capitargli (e che lo stesso Harry non sa spiegare).

La più grande paura dei Dursleys è che Harry scopra la verità su sé stesso; per questo quando iniziano ad arrivargli delle lettere per il suo undicesimo compleanno, non gli permettono di leggerle. I Dursleys però non hanno a che fare con un postino ordinario, e a mezzanotte della notte del compleanno di Harry un gigantesco Rubeus Hagrid butta giù la porta e fa in modo che Harry legga la sua posta una volta per tutte. Senza badare ai Dursleys, che sono orripilati, Hagrid spiega a Harry che è un mago e gli consegna una lettera che lo informa di essere atteso alla Scuola di magia e stregoneria di Hogwarts il mese dopo.

Nonostante la rabbia dei Dursleys, Hagrid racconta a Harry la verità sul suo passato. La cicatrice che ha sulla fronte non viene dall’incidente in auto; è in verità un marchio che gli lasciò il grande mago di magia nera Voldemort, quando uccise sua madre e suo padre ma misteriosamente non riuscì a uccidere lui, anche se all’epoca era solo un bambino. Harry è diventato famoso tra i maghi e le maghe che vivono in segreto in tutto il paese perché la sua miracolosa sopravvivenza causò la caduta di Voldemort.

Così Harry, che non ha mai avuto amici e una famiglia degna di questo nome, inizia una nuova vita nel mondo magico. Va a Londra con Hagrid per comprare materiale per Hogwarts (mantelli, bacchetta magica, un calderone, libri per principianti e un kit per le pozioni), e poco dopo parte per Hogwarts dalla stazione di Kings Cross Station (binario nove e tre quarti) per seguire le orme dei suoi genitori.

Harry fa amicizia con Ronald Weasley (il sesto della sua famiglia a Hogwarts, stufo di avere un libro di incantesimi di seconda mano) e con Hermione Granger (la ragazza più intelligente dell’anno scolastico e l’unica persona della classe a sapere tutto sul sangue di drago). Insieme seguono le loro prime lezione di magia – Astronomia nella torre più alta alle due del mattino; Erbologia nelle serre dove ci sono mandragole e antidoti ai lupi mannari, Pozioni nei sotterranei con l’odiato insegnante Severus Snape. Harry, Ron e Hermione scoprono i passaggi segreti della scuola, imparano a trattare Pix il poltergeist e ad affrontare un troll infuriato e grosso come una montagna; soprattutto, Harry diventa una star del Quidditch (il calcio dei maghi che si gioca su manici di scopa).

La cosa che interessa di più a Harry e ai suoi amici però è scoprire perché il corridoio al terzo piano è sorvegliato così tanto. Seguendo un indizio lasciato cadere da Hagrid (che quando non consegna lettere è il guardiacaccia di Hogwarts), scoprono che l’unica pietra filosofale esistente al mondo è conservata a Hogwarts: è una pietra i cui poteri danno ricchezza infinita e vita eterna. Harry, Ron e Hermione sembrano essere le uniche persone ad aver capito che Snape, l’insegnante di Pozioni, sta pensando di rubarla; sempre loro sono gli unici a capire le cose tremende che potrebbero succedere se la pietra finisse nelle mani sbagliate. La pietra filosofale è infatti tutto quel che serve per ridare a Voldemort tutta la sua forza e i suoi poteri. Sembra che Harry sia arrivato a Hogwarts per incontrare l’assassino dei suoi genitori faccia a faccia, senza sapere come ha fatto a sopravvivere l’ultima volta».

«Harry Potter lives with his aunt, uncle and cousin because his parents died in a car-crash — or so he has been told. The Dursleys don’t like Harry asking questions; in fact, they don’t seem to like anything about him, especially the very odd things that keep happening around him (which Harry himself can’t explain).

The Dursleys’ greatest fear is that Harry will discover the truth about himself, so when letters start arriving for him near his eleventh birthday, he isn’t allowed to read them. However, the Dursleys aren’t dealing with an ordinary postman, and at midnight on Harry’s birthday the gigantic Rubeus Hagrid breaks down the door to make sure Harry gets to read his post at last. Ignoring the horrified Dursleys, Hagrid informs Harry that he is a wizard, and the letter he gives Harry explains that he is expected at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in a month’s time.

To the Dursleys’ fury, Hagrid also reveals the truth about Harry’s past. Harry did not receive the scar on his forehead in a car-crash; it is really the mark of the great dark sorcerer Voldemort, who killed Harry’s mother and father but mysteriously couldn’t kill him, even though he was a baby at the time. Harry is famous among the witches and wizards who live in secret all over the country because Harry’s miraculous survival marked Voldemort’s downfall.

So Harry, who has never had friends or family worth the name, sets off for a new life in the wizarding world. He takes a trip to London with Hagrid to buy his Hogwarts equipment (robes, wand, cauldron, beginners’ draft and potion kit) and shortly afterwards, sets off for Hogwarts from Kings Cross Station (platform nine and three quarters) to follow in his parents’ footsteps.

Harry makes friends with Ronald Weasley (sixth in his family to go to Hogwarts and tired of having to use second-hand spellbooks) and Hermione Granger (cleverest girl in the year and the only person in the class to know all the uses of dragon’s blood). Together, they have their first lessons in magic — astronomy up on the tallest tower at two in the morning, herbology out in the greenhouses where the madrakes and wolfsbane are kept, potions down in the dungeons with the loathsome Severus Snape. Harry, Ron and Hermione discover the schoool’s secret passageways, learn how to deal with Peeves the poltergeist and how to tackle an angry mountain troll: best of all, Harry becomes a star player at Quidditch (wizard football played on broomsticks).

What interest Harry and his friends most, though, is why the corridor on the third floor is so heavily guarded. Following up a clue dropped by Hagrid (who, when he is not delivering letters, is Hogwarts’ gamekeeper), they discover that the only Philosopher’s Stone in existence is being kept at Hogwarts, a stone with powers to give limitless wealth and eternal life. Harry, Ron and Hermione seem to be the only people who have realised that Snape the potions master is planning to steal the stone – and what terrible things it could do in the wrong hands. For the Philosopher’s Stone is all that is needed to bring Voldemort back to full strength and power … it seems Harry has come to Hogwarts to meet his parents’ killer face to face – with no idea how he survived last time».
