Trent’anni fa, dopo il successo dell’iniziativa dei musicisti britannici “Band Aid” per raccogliere fondi in aiuto dell’Etiopia, un simile progetto fu avviato anche negli Stati Uniti coinvolgendo molti famosissimi musicisti statunitensi. Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie scrissero la canzone “We are the world” e un gruppo senza precedenti si riunì (col nome di “USA for Africa”) per una settimana in alcune sessioni di registrazione, tra il 21 e il 28 gennaio. Il disco uscì un mese dopo ed ebbe uno straordinario successo in tutto il mondo: due concerti paralleli a Londra e Philadelphia completarono il progetto nel luglio successivo.
