La cantante americana Alicia Keys ha diffuso una canzone sul caso Eric Garner, l’uomo afroamericano ucciso da un poliziotto bianco durante un arresto piuttosto brutale. Mercoledì 3 dicembre il gran giurì di Staten Island, New York, ha deciso di non incriminare l’agente: dopo la decisione ci sono state molte proteste a New York e in altre città.
La canzone di Alicia Keys si intitola “We gotta pray” e parla di sirene e fumo nelle strade, in riferimento alle proteste. È accompagnata da un video che combina immagini delle proteste di questi giorni con quelle per i diritti civili del passato, e immagini e citazioni di Martin Luther King e Gandhi con foto di persone in preghiera. Verso la fine del video compare una foto di Garner, visibile per circa dieci secondi. Keys ha spiegato in un’intervista che ha scritto la canzone nei mesi scorsi, dopo la morte di Garner e di Michael Brown a Ferguson, e che l’ha registrata da sola di notte.
